Deliverables
Print-ready files for an 85-page A5 perfect bound book, optimized spread and single page formats of zine for digital consumption, 200+ static graphics and 6 motion graphics for social media, 1 promotional video, 20 listing graphics and 2 header banners for the online store.
Role & Impact
Served as the project manager, sole designer and social media manager, overseeing all aspects from conceptualization, scoping and deadline setting, production and customer fulfillment stages of the life-cycle. Developed brand identity, and design library in Figma with colour and text styles, reusable components to use across 165 posts on Twitter over the 1.5 year project period. Gave mentorship on Figma design capabilities and developing reusable assets for efficiency. Reviewed 170+ contributor applications and curated a team of 32 page artists and 7 writers on the basis of style and quality of artworks and written fiction works.
Handled project and team administration sans finance and fulfillment logistics, including but not limited to contributor organization, social media marketing strategy and account management, internal and external communications (project announcements, outreach, application emails, manufacturers, etc.). The project shipped 200 orders around the world to customers, and zine contributors all received the physical and PDF zine and all merch.
WHAT IS SUNNY DAY? — Context and Concept
Sunny Day is a daily life themed zine celebrating the 10th anniversary of the manga finale of Katekyo Hitman REBORN! (KHR!) by Akira Amano, which was serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump from March 24, 2004 until November 12, 2012. The zine's namesake is from the anime's 7th opening song, “Funny Sunny Day” by SxOxU, which was used in the project's promotional video (below). The name hopes to invoke feelings of nostalgia and happy times in fans who may reminisce in one of the anime's key milestones.
To play into the theme of daily life, the branding centred on the use of loose leaf papers and polaroid photos to capture the ideas of casual notes and snapshots of a moment in time. As for the art and writing direction for the zine's inside contents, the colours in the artwork is vibrant and colourful, and the tone of voice in writing is warm, often comedic, and light hearted.
